From day-three swelling to the six-month reveal: the healing milestones to expect after surgery.
Recovery feels mysterious until someone walks you through it. While every procedure and patient is different, healing follows a predictable rhythm, and knowing the milestones ahead keeps anxiety low and compliance high.
Week one is about rest and protection. Swelling and bruising peak around day three, then begin to ease. Keep dressings dry, take medications exactly as prescribed, sleep elevated where advised, and let other people handle lifting, driving and chores. Short gentle walks prevent stiffness and support circulation.
Weeks two to four bring visible turning points: bruises fade from purple to yellow, energy returns in waves, and most patients resume desk work. This is also when patience matters most — swelling fluctuates day to day, and final contours are nowhere near visible yet. Attend every follow-up, even if you feel fine.
Months two to six are the refinement phase. Numbness fades, scars mature from red to pale, and sensation normalises. Scar massage, sun protection and your compression routine do their quiet work here. By month six, most results are essentially final — and nearly every patient tells us the wait was worth it.
